Profile

Harvey studied information technology at a graduate school. He has polished product design skills by utilizing his experiences in business strategy and requirement from his past job. Sometimes he conceptualize work having breakfast at a café. He also plays strategic game like Poker and cooks with his wife in his free time.

Harvey's work today.

I work on product design of new features of Rakuten Pay app. As an UX designer, I want to deliver more value to the customer through my product design.
Rakuten Pay app has many features like invoice payment and Suica auto charge in addition to just making payments. As I conceptualize new features, I also collaborate with other groups at Rakuten to determine what this app should be as a whole from a macro point of view. It is very challenging to work with so many stakeholders, but it's very rewarding to work together with everyone.

Why did Harvey chose Rakuten
Payment?

Today's product management requires broad overview of business, tech and design. Since I developed business product management skills from my previous job and engineering skills from a part time job while I'm in a graduate school, I was hoping to earn product design skills, especially interface design.
I chose Rakuten Payment because of its in-house design teams that values design and it is rapidly growing at the moment. As we aim to expand market share, I thought there is a lot of opportunity in my early stage of career.
After I joined, I was assigned to a lot of projects and I started my role as a product manager. I am now able to contribute as a specialist product manager.

Why is working at Rakuten Payment attractive?

I particularly recall Suica auto charge project. I worked with not only Rakuten group, but also with East Japan Railway Company. It was challenging to find the common ground which meets requirements from both companies. I earned skills to present why this design needs to be this way to just about everyone.
I faced a lot of limitation, but providing values of auto charge feature through UX design based on user journeys, I was able to design user experience with confidence and won the 1st place in in-house usability tests. After release, I received many positive reviews from users.
This is a proud product I use every day which taught me a sense of responsibility to meet high quality standard.

What is Harvey's next goal in career?

I hope to tackle entire product development while I retain my skill in design. I want to deliver Rakuten Pay's unique value by using Rakuten Point.
Rakuten Pay offers key value where users can earn and use Rakuten Points. Users can enter Rakuten eco-system, use Rakuten services, earn Rakuten Points and spend points on Rakuten Pay app while earning more points by using it. I want to offer values only Rakuten Pay can provide through this long customer journey. I also want to collaborate with Rakuten Group companies to gather more Rakuten eco-system members. I give myself challenges to create various ways how prominent value of Rakuten Point can be utilized to invite users to choose Rakuten Pay app.

Message to Candidates

At Rakuten Payment, I polished skills to present design for users to achieve their goals third party stakeholders. In addition to quantitative data, I incorporate qualitative information such as user insight into my product design. Rakuten Payment allows me to do that.
Providing transaction service is one of the core service in Rakuten Group. This industry is rapidly moving and speedy judgement is the key to success. This allows to to face many projects with many opportunity to grow. If you want to grow fast, this may be a great job for you. Many projects are launching and running as we speak. I am positive that we expand into fun and new areas of expertise!
